Un Certain Regard Winners List 2023

Focused on arthouse, artistically daring films, the 2023 Un Certain Regard selection has included 20 feature films – 8 of which are first features also competing for the Caméra d’or This year, the opening film was Thomas Cailley’s Le Règne animal. Chaired by American actor John C. Reilly, the Jury included French director and screenwriter Alice Winocour, German actress Paula Beer, French-Cambodian director and producer Davy Chou and Belgian actress Émilie Dequenne. Un Certain Regard 2023 ends on a high note with the screening of Alex Lutz’s film Une nuit.

The winners of the 26th La Cinef Selection

The Short Films and La Cinef Jury presided by Ildikó Enyedi and comprised of Ana Lily AmirpourShlomi ElkabetzCharlotte Le Bon and Karidja Touré has awarded the 2023 La Cinef Prizes today during a ceremony held in the Buñuel theatre, followed by the screening of the winning films. La Cinef consisted of 16 student films, chosen out of 2 000 entries coming from 476 film schools around the world.

Cannes Classics & the Cinéma de la Plage 2023

We might introduce these credits by speaking them, like Him in the opening of The Contempt : it’s Film History at the Festival de Cannes… there’s Wim Wenders’s Room 666 revisited in 2023 by a young director… there’s Liv Ullmann and Paul Rassam, there are two resplendent Ozus… Man Ray is put to music by Jim Jarmush and Carter Logan… Tavernier and Parrish take a stroll down the Mississippi, the centennial of the year is Warner’s, documentary filmmaker Nelson Pereira dos Santos will be celebrated, as will the rock life of Anita Pallenberg, Hitchcock will be celebrated by the Film Foundation and Sautet by Belmondo and Ventura… there are also two rarities from Cannes 1966, dockers from Marseille, Italian, Swiss and Hungarian rediscoveries, in fictions, in documentaries, in restored prints, some Messieurs de la santé, Rogelio A. Gonzalez the Mexican, René Mugica the Argentinian who adapted Jorge-Luis Borges… the Festival de Cannes presents Cannes Classics 2023, dedicated to the one who said: “With cinema, we talk about everything, we get to everything”, Jean-Luc Godard, whose last work, Phony Wars, will be presented, like all his latest films, in world premiere at the Festival de Cannes.



Godard three times and for the ultimate time in majesty: the filmmaker celebrated through his last movie in world premiere, an exclusive documentary about him and a 4K restoration of one of his many masterpieces.

Cannes Classics will launch the celebration of Ozu, who was born in 1903 and who died in 1963. The second part of the year will be placed under the sign of the Japanese director with two new restorations in world premiere.

In 1923, Man Ray improvises his first film. This movie, boldly surrealist, is called Le Retour à la raison. Subsequently, he renews the experience with Emak Bakia in 1926, L‘Étoile de mer in 1928 and Les Mystères du château de Dé in 1929.
In 2023, Jim Jarmush and Carter Logan, the founding members of the group Sqürl, compose a soundtrack to the four films as if they were forming one unique piece. Return To Reason celebrates the 100th anniversary of Man Ray’s cinematic Œuvre, restored for the first time in 4K. Il reveals the unique dialogue between two multitalented artists, and creates an undefinable object, a piece of visual music that resonates through its modernity and poetry.

Because the relation of contemporary cinema to its own history was about to be shaken up by the arrival of digitalization, because the Festival de Cannes must also enchant cinemas of the past, the Festival de Cannes created Cannes Classics in 2004, to present classical films in restored versions. A now integral and essential part of the Selection Officielle, Cannes Classics is also a way for the festival to pay homage to the fundamental work provided by right-holders, cinematheques, production companies and national archives across the world. In this way, Cannes Classics puts the Festival de Cannes’ prestige in service of rediscovered cinema, accompanying the release of great films of the past in theaters or on DVD.

The film was reconstituted in accordance with its original version using an incomplete positive print, a complete duplicate and incomplete 16mm rushes. Film restored in 4K by Véronique Manniez-Rivette and Les films du Veilleur, with the support of the CNC, by the Hiventy laboratory in Boulogne Billancourt, and under the supervision of Caroline Champetier, AFC.

At the Festival de Cannes, Vidas SecasAzyllo muito Louco and O Amuleto de Ogun competed for the Palme d’Or. In 2012, Música Segundo Tom Jobim was screened during a tribute session dedicated to the filmmaker. The film shows us the man behind the camera. Through his legacy it is possible to ser all the richness of Brazilian culture reflected.

A pioneering post-war female film director, an instigator of the New Wave who was honored by Hollywood in her own lifetime, Agnès Varda has become a source of inspiration for a whole new generation of young filmmakers. With movies like Cléo de 5 à 7, Le Bonheur, Sans toit ni loi, Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse, she created a quirky, open to the world, sensitive to the disenfranchised, often silly body of work. Always one finger on the pulse, she shook everything up, including cinema itself which she refused to constrict to pure fiction or long-form films.

An exploration of the life of Anita Pallenberg, European actress and rock ’n’ roll muse. Told in Anita’s own words, from her unpublished memoir, and in the words of her family, this bittersweet film is a never-seen-before look at life with The Rolling Stones. Using Super 8mm home movies shot in the 1960s and 1970s, and contemporary interviews, the filmmakers weave together an intimate and profoundly moving story. Anita was a woman with a wild life: she dazzled the Festival de Cannes Film Festival and and inspired love in those around her, including Tilda Swinton who performed the voice over of the film.

Michael Douglas will be the guest of honor at the opening ceremony.
To complete the tribute paid to him, a new documentary by Amine Mestari, produced by Folamour and soon to be broadcasted on Arte, will be visible for two days on the Festival website, from Sunday, May 14th at 6PM to Tuesday, May 16th at 6PM.

Park Circus will release the new 4K restoration into theatres worldwide; including in the UK (2nd June), France (5th July) and the US (4th August).

The Jury of the 76th Cannes film festival, unveiled!

On February 28, Ruben Östlund was named President of the Jury. In this new edition which follows the 75th anniversary, the Festival de Cannes wishes to welcome a new generation of artists who direct, act, sing and write. Alongside the President who was twice awarded the Palme d’or, the Jury features Moroccan director Maryam Touzani, French actor Denis Ménochet, British-Zambian screenwriter & director Rungano Nyoni, American actress & director Brie Larson, American actor Paul Dano, Afghan author Atiq Rahimi, Argentinian director & screenwriter Damián Szifrón and French director Julia Ducournau who won the top prize in 2021.


The Jury will have the task of awarding the Palme d’or to one of the 21 films announced in the Competition. The awards will be revealed on May 27 at the Closing ceremony which will be broadcast live by France Télévisions in France and by Brut. internationally. It will be followed by the Festival’s Last Screening: Elemental, the animated film by Peter Sohn.

RUBEN ÖSTLUND President Director Sweden

After studying cinema in Gothenburg, he directed his first feature film, The Guitar Mongoloid, in 2004. On the edge of the documentary genre, the film describes the intersecting destinies of outcasts in a fictional city that closely resembles Gothenburg. Humor as a tool of sociological description is already apparent.
His next short film, Autobiographical Scene Number 6882, gathers all the ingredients of his future work, which are affirmed in Involuntary, a feature film selected at Un Certain Regard in 2008. Östlund positions the camera at a relevant distance to better observe human behavior: small weaknesses and major flaws caused by group dynamics are then dissected to the point of discomfort. His third feature film, Play, which was presented at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes in 2011, describes harassment between youth gangs. When it was released in Sweden it gave rise to a major debate across Swedish society.
In Force Majeure, which was screened at Un Certain Regard in 2014, the situation takes on the aspect of an avalanche where a father prefers to take cover rather than save his wife and children: how can he accept the aftermath, in bad faith and in fear of losing face? Such is the issue that the director examines with ferocious acidity.
Ruben Östlund repeatedly explores a provocative dialectic which has become his signature: an initial situation sets the stage for a sociological examination where the baser instincts of our humanity are painstakingly and uncompromisingly examined with corrosive humor.
In 2017, in The Square, he tells the fictional story of an artistic experiment he conducted in his native country. The film addresses brilliantly the boundaries of public space, art and the animal aspects within ourselves. Finally, in 2022, Triangle of Sadness chronicles a cruise ship caught in a storm that reshuffles the cards of class struggle in Western societies in a nauseating hullabaloo.

MARYAM TOUZANI Director & screenwriter Marocco

Having begun her career as a film critic, Maryam Touzani soon desired to express her vision in a different way and stepped behind the camera to direct two noteworthy short films, Quand ils dorment and Aya va à la plage. She then collaborated on Nabil Ayouch’s Much Loved. In 2019, she directed her first feature film, Adam, selected for the Un Certain Regard at the Festival de Cannes and shortlisted for the Oscars. She then collaborated once again with Nabil Ayouch, with whom she co-wrote Razzia, a film in which she also starred, and Casablanca Beats, selected in Competition for the Festival de Cannes in 2021. She returned to the Festival as a director with the highly acclaimed The Blue Caftan (2022), selected for Un Certain Regard and shortlisted for the Oscars. She is currently working on her first novel and her next feature film.


Denis Ménochet became known to the general public in the opening scene of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, in Competition at the Festival de Cannes in 2009. He continued his career with French and international directors including Ridley Scott (Robin Hood, 2010), Julie Delpy (Skylab, 2011), Rebecca Zlotowski (Grand Central, selected for Un Certain Regard 2013), Stephen Frears (The Program, 2015), Wes Anderson (The French Dispatch, in Competition at the Festival de Cannes 2021) and François Ozon, with whom he has collaborated three times (In the House in 2012, By the Grace of God in 2018, Peter Von Kant in 2022). Hailed by critics in Xavier Legrand’s Custody (2016), he recently won the Goya Award for Best Actor for Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beasts, presented in Cannes last year. He is starring in the upcoming Beau Is Afraid, by the American director Ari Aster.

RUNGANO NYONI Screenwriter & director Zambia/United Kingdom

Born in Zambia, Rungano Nyoni grew up in Wales, studied at the University of the Arts of London and now lives in Lisbon. Acclaimed since her debut in 2009 with 20 Questions and The List, winner of a BAFTA Cymru Award, she carried on with Mwansa the Great (2011), nominated at the BAFTA. Then, she co-wrote the short film The Mass of Men, Golden Leopard at Locarno in 2012. Her film Listen (2014) received the Best Narrative Short Award at the Tribeca Festival. Her first feature I’m Not a Witch caused a sensation, questioning the difficulty of individuals to free themselves from rules and norms, however absurd they may be. The film, written at La Résidence du Festival de Cannes, was premiered in Cannes and won Nyoni the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut in 2018. She is currently editing her upcoming feature On Becoming a Guinea Fowl.

BRIE LARSON Actress, director & producer United States

Academy Award-winning actress for her role in Room, Brie Larson is known for making cinematic history as the star of Marvel’s first female-led superhero film, Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck in 2019. In 2013, Brie Larson starred in Short Term 12, her first collaboration with D. Daniel Cretton. Her dramatic role as Grace earned her the Best Actress award at the Locarno Film Festival. In 2016, she did not only win the Oscar for her breakthrough performance in L. Abrahamson’s Room, but also the Golden Globe and the BAFTA . Larson has worked with top directors on esteemed films including J. Apatow’s Trainwreck, J. Ponsoldt’s The Spectacular Now, J. Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut Don Jon, P. Lord & C. Miller’s 21 Jump Street, and E. Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. She appeared on stage at the prestigious Williamstown Theater Festival. Larson will be next seen starring in this year’s Fast XThe Marvels and Lessons in Chemistry.

PAUL DANO Actor, screenwriter & director United States

Internationally celebrated for portraying characters with complex motives and morals, Paul Dano has starred in many acclaimed films, since his debut at the age of 17 including Little Miss Sunshine by Johnathan Dayton & Valerie Faris (2006), There Will Be Blood by Paul Thomas Anderson (2007), Prisoners by Denis Villeneuve (2013), Twelve Years a Slave by Steve McQueen (2013), Oscar winner for Best Picture in 2014 and Love & Mercy by Bill Pohlad. In 2015, he was cast in Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth, in Festival de Cannes’ Competition, where he came back in 2017 with Okja by Bong Joon-ho. In 2018, Dano’s directorial debut Wildlife, has met with critical acclaim debuting at Sundance. Last year, Dano starred in the Spielberg’s Oscar nominated drama, The Fabelmans, and The Batman by Matt Reeves. Dano’s upcoming films include Craig Gillespie’s Dumb Money and Johan Renck’s Spaceman.

ATIQ RAHIMI Writer & director Afghanistan

Born in Kabul, Atiq Rahimi took refuge in France after the invasion of Afghanistan. He is an esteemed writer whose work is precious and important. Published in 2000, his first book, Earth and Ashes is adapted by himself for the screen in 2004 and selected to the Festival de Cannes’ Un Certain Regard the same year. Prix Goncourt in 2008 for his book Syngué Sabour, Pierre de patience, he’s serving up another book-to-screen adaptation in 2012, universally acclaimed by critics and audience.
Atiq Rahimi’s books have been translated into more than 20 languages, they are published in France at P.O.L editions. In 2011, it’s A Curse on Dostoevsky and in 2015, La Ballade du Calame. His most recent novel is Les Porteurs d’Eau. In 2019, he finished shooting his third fiction film in Rwanda, based on Scholastique Mukasonga’s novel Our Lady of the Nile. In 2022, he wrote the libretto Shirine for the Lyon Opera house. Blessed with a visual eye, he also invented and exhibits his callimorphie, art made of drawings and Persian & Japanese calligraphy.

DAMIÁN SZIFRÓN Director & writer Argentina

In 2014, his film Wild Tales, which he wrote and directed, made the Competition of the Official Selection bend with laughter before doing the same around the world, up to the Oscars. Damián Szifron is an Argentinian director and screenwriter. The film, produced by Pedro Almodóvar, won the BAFTA, the Goya, and more than 40 international prizes while becoming the most successful Argentinian film of all time. Among his previous works are his debut film The Bottom of the Sea (2003), On Probation (2005) and the multi-award winning TV series The Pretenders (2002) which was remade in many countries around the world and remains the most successful original TV series ever in Argentina. His new film, To Catch a Killer, an original thriller where he partnered with Shailene Woodley who plays the lead role, has just been successfully released worldwide in this spring of 2023.

JULIA DUCOURNAU Director & screenwriter France

Palme d’or awarded for Titane in 2021, Julia Ducournau has established herself on the front scene of cinema thanks to her powerful and somewhat disturbing works. Her unique approach of genre cinema enables her to transcend taboos. After graduating from La Fémis, where she studied screenwriting she presented in Cannes in 2011 her short film Junior, which won awards in many Festivals. Her first feature film, Raw, allowed her to gain international recognition: it was awarded the FIPRESCI prize in 2016 and was presented at La Semaine de la Critique, Toronto and Sundance Festivals. In 2020, she directed two episodes of the American series Servant, created by M. Night Shyalaman. In 2022 she directed two episodes of the Apple series The New Look featuring Juliette Binoche and Ben Mendelsohn, which is soon to be released. She is currently working on her own series in the US with A24 TV and her next feature film.
