The International Juries have been selected for the Venezia 79 Competition, for Orizzonti and for the Luigi De Laurentiis” Venice Award for a Debut Film of the 79th Venice International Film Festival (August 31 – September 10, 2022) of La Biennale di Venezia, directed by Alberto Barbera.

 

Venezia 79

  • Julianne Moore – president (USA). Academy Award and Emmy winner Julianne Moore is known for her breadth of work with many memorable performances from the big to the small screen. She is an Academy Award, BAFTA and Emmy winning actor, and the first American woman to be awarded top acting prizes at the Berlin, Venice and Cannes film festivals. Most recently, Moore starred in the A24’s When You Finish Saving the World, directed by Jesse Eisenberg and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2021, she starred in Apple TV+’s Lisey’s Story, based on the Stephen King novel, and Dear Evan Hansen opposite Ben Platt. Moore can next be seen in A24’s Sharper starring alongside Sebastian Stan and John Lithgow. In 2015, Moore won an Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award, among others for her role in Still Alice with Kristen Stewart, Alec Baldwin and Kate Bosworth. In 2014, she received the Palme D’Or, Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her work in Maps to the Stars. Moore is the ninth person in Academy history to receive two acting Oscar nominations in the same year for her performances in Far from Heaven (Best Actress nomination) and The Hours (Best Supporting Actress nomination), after receiving many critics’ awards as well as SAG and Golden Globe nominations for both. In 2012, she won the Primetime Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for her role as Alaska Governor Sarah Palin in the HBO original movie Game Change. This role also garnered wins at the 2013 SAG Awards and Golden Globe Awards. Her additional honors include the Excellence in Media Award at the 2004 GLAAD Media Awards, the Silver Bear Award at the 2003 Berlin International Film Festival, the 2002 Coppa Volpi as Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival, the Actor Award at the 2002 Gotham Awards and the “Tribute to Independent Vision” at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. Moore’s has starred in over 70 films including: Gloria Bell (also credited as Executive Producer), The Glorias; After the Wedding; Kingsman: The Golden Circle; Hunger Games: Mockingjay 1 & 2,; Crazy, Stupid, Love; The Kids Are All Right; A Single Man; The Forgotten; and The Big Lebowski. Julianne is a NY Times bestselling author for her children’s book series Freckleface Strawberry. In 2015, she became Founding Chair of the Everytown for Gun Safety Creative Council, a creative community established to help amplify the movement to end gun violence in America.
  • Mariano Cohn (Argentina) is a film director, screenwriter and producer. He has made ten feature films – including The Man Next Door, The Distinguished Citizen and 4×4 – that premiered at the most important film festivals in the world and received numerous international awards. His most recent film is Official Competition with Penélope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Oscar Martínez in the leading roles, which premiered during the Venice Film Festival last year.
  • Leonardo Di Costanzo (Italy), director and screenwriter. In 2013 he won the David di Donatello award as best debut director for The Interval – L’intervallo, presented in 2012 in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival. In 2013, he was a member of the Orizzonti jury in Venice. The Inner Cage – Ariaferma (2021), his latest film, was screened out of Competition in Venice and won a David di Donatello award for best screenplay and best leading actor for Silvio Orlando.
  • Audrey Diwan (France) filmmaker and author, is also a screenwriter and has collaborated with Cédric Jimenez, Gilles Lellouche and Valérie Donzelli, among others. Diwan made her feature film directing debut with Mais vous êtes fous, starring Cèline Sallette and Pio Marmaï. Her latest film, Happening – L’évènement, won the Golden Lion in Venice in 2021.
  • Leila Hatami (Iran), is an actress born in Tehran. She gained world recognition in Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation which won her the Silver Bear in Berlinale 65. Since then, she has had a noted performance in The Last Step for which she won the best actress award at the Karlovy Vary Festival in 2012. In 2014,  she was a member of the jury at Cannes.
  • Kazuo Ishiguro (Japan, UK), is a Nobel Prize winning novelist and screenwriter. Born in Nagasaki, Japan in 1954, he moved to Britain with his parents when he was five years old. His books, translated into over fifty languages, have earned him many honours around the world, and The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go were adapted into acclaimed films.
  • Rodrigo Sorogoyen (Spain), is a director, screenwriter and producer. His short film Madre  was nominated for an Academy Award in 2019, while his feature film The Candidate won seven Goya awards in 2019. That same year he presented his second film Mother in Orizzonti, which won the best actress award for Marta Nieto.

 

The Jury of Venezia 79 will award the following official prizes to the feature films in Competition:  Golden Lion for Best Film, Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize, Silver Lion for Best Director, Coppa Volpi for Best Actress, Coppa Volpi for Best Actor, Special Jury Prize, Award for Best Screenplay, “Marcello Mastroianni” Award for Best New Young Actor or Actress.

 

Orizzonti

  • Isabel Coixet – president (Spain) is a director, screenwriter and producer. Her international success came in 2003 with the intimate drama My Life Without Me. Two years later The Secret Life of Words was awarded 4 Goyas. In 2017 Coixet released The Bookshop, which won Best Director, Film and Adapted Screenplay at the Goyas. In 2019 she filmed her first series for HBO, Foodie Love, and in 2020, It Snows in Benidorm, produced by El Deseo.
  • Laura Bispuri (Italy), director, won the David di Donatello for her first short film Passing Time. Her first feature film, Sworn Virgin, was presented in Competition at the Berlin Film Festival. Her second film, Daughter of Mine, was also in Competition at the Berlin Film Festival. Her third feature film, The Peacock’s Paradise, was presented in the Orizzonti section of the Venice International Film Festival.
  • Antonio Campos (USA), director, screenwriter and producer. In 2005 his short film Buy It Now won first prize in Cannes Cinéfondation category. His first feature film Afterschool was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008 in the Un Certain Regard section. His latest film, The Devil All the Time, with Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland, was released on Netflix in 2020. Most recently, he created, wrote and directed The Staircase, a limited series on HBO Max starring Colin Firth, Toni Collette and Juliette Binoche.
  • Sofia Djama (Algeria) born in Oran, moved to Algiers to complete the Bachelor’s degree in Literature she started in Bejaia. Softly, One Saturday Morning, an adaptation of one of her short stories, was her first short film. It was widely acclaimed and received two awards in Clermont Ferrand. In 2017 her first feature film, The Blessed, won the Orizzonti Award for Best Actress for Lyna Khoudri.
  • Edouard Waintrop (France) worked over more than a quarter century for the Parisian daily newspaper Libération. In 2007, he became the artistic director of the Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland and in 2011, of the Directors Fortnight at Cannes, where he held this position for 7 years.

 

 

The Orizzonti Jury will award the following prizes, with no joint awards allowed:

Orizzonti Award for Best Film, Orizzonti Award for Best Director, Special Orizzonti Jury Prize, Orizzonti Award for Best Actress, Orizzonti Award for Best Actor, Orizzonti Award for Best Screenplay, Orizzonti Award for Best Short Film.

 

“Luigi de Laurentiis” Award for a Debut Film

  • Michelangelo Frammartino – president (Italy), director. His debut film The Gift (2003), presented at the Locarno Film Festival, was followed by The Four Times (2010), presented at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at Cannes, where it won the Europa Cinemas Label award. In April 2013, he presented the single-channel video installation Alberi in the Dome at MoMA PS1 in New York. The Hole was presented in competition in Venice in 2021, where it won the Special Jury Prize.
  • Jan P. Matuszynski (Poland) is a director and screenwriter. His documentary Deep Love won, among others, the Best Documentary Award at the 36th International Film Festival in Moscow and the Silver Horn award for Best Feature Documentary Film at the 54th Kraköw Film Festival. His feature debut, Ostatnia rodzina, premiered at Locarno, where it won the Best Actor Award. Leave no Traces (2021), his latest film, was screened in competition in Venice.
  • Ana Rocha de Sousa (Portugal) is a director, screenwriter and artist who began her career as an actress. Her debut feature, Listen, premiered at the 77th Venice Film Festival winning not only the Lion of the future but also the Special Orizzonti Jury Prize. Adding to it, that year, other parallel Venice awards.
  • Tessa Thompson (USA) is an actress and producer. Most recently, Thompson can be seen as ‘Valkyrie’ in Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder which was released in theatres in July 2022. She is a BAFTA nominated actress for her role in Rebecca Hall’s directorial debut Passing (2021). In 2020, Thompson starred in Amazon Prime’s Sylvie’s Love, which she Executive Produced. Thompson is currently in post-production of Creed III which is set to release in March 2023. Thompson’s past film credits include the Creed franchise, Selma (2014) and Dear White People (2014). Thompson can also be seen starring on television in HBO’s Westworld Season 4. Her production company Viva Maude is also actively in development on several projects including Secret Lives of Church Ladies, Luster and Who Fears Death.
  • Rosalie Varda (France) is a French producer and costume designer. In 2018 she was nominated for an Oscar as the producer of the film Visages villages. She designed the costumes for the films Passion (1982) by Jean-Luc Godard, Une chambre en ville (1982) by Jacques Demy and One Hundred and One Nights (1995) by Agnès Varda.

 

The Jury of the Venice Award for a Debut Film will award to one of the debut feature-length films selected from the various competitive sections of the Venice Film Festival (Official Selection and Independent and Parallel Sidebars), with no joint awards allowed, the Lion of the Future – “Luigi De Laurentiis” Venice Award for a Debut Film, with a cash prize of 100,000 USD donated by Filmauro, to be divided equally between the director and the producer.

THE ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS AND SCIENCES AT THE VENICE FILM FESTIVAL

For the first time, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will officially attend the Venice International Film Festival, on the occasion of the festival’s 90th anniversaryLa Biennale di VeneziaCinecittà, and Mastercard will welcome the Academy’s new CEO Bill Kramer – who will participate at the 79th Venice Film Festival along with a number of Academy delegates – at various important events to celebrate international cinema together.

In particular, on Tuesday, August 30 at 3 pm, at the Press Room (Palazzo del Casinò, Venice Lido), there will be a round table discussion entitled The values of cinema in global society, with the participation of the Academy’s CEO Bill Kramer, the President of La Biennale Roberto Cicutto, the Artistic Director of the Venice International Film Festival Alberto Barbera, the President of Cinecittà Chiara Sbarigia, the CEO of Cinecittà Nicola Maccanico, and Mastercard’s Country Manager Italy Michele Centemero. The panel will be moderated by the Variety correspondent Nick Vivarelli.

Also on Tuesday, August 30Bill Kramer will participate at an exclusive event in partnership with Mastercard which will be held that evening at Misericordia (historic center of Venice). Then, on the evening of Wednesday, August 31, he will take attend the opening Gala in the Sala Grande (Palazzo del Cinema). Lastly, on Thursday, September 1, at the Lido, Bill Kramer will meet with Academy members from around the world who are attending the festival, as well as with key representatives of international cinema.

ACADEMY IN VENICE PROGRAMME

Tuesday, August 30
3 pm – Venice Lido. Press Room (Palazzo del Casinò). Press presentation and round table discussion: The values of cinema in global society. In the presence of the Academy’s CEO, the President of the Biennale, the Artistic Director of the Venice International Film Festival, the CEO and the President of Cinecittà, and Mastercard’s Country Manager Italy.
8 pm – Scuola Grande della Misericordia: cocktail party
9:30 pm – Reception in partnership with Mastercard. Music by Aria and Friends Orchestra; dinner by Chef Alajmo, 3 Michelin stars.

Thursday, September 1
1 pm – Hotel Excelsior. Brunch with the participation of Bill Kramer, Academy delegates, and many national and international guests attending the Film Festival.
